From the President

Isn't it wonderful to feel the weather improving and to see the days lengthening?
It will soon be time to get the BBQ up and running again.
In less than 2 weeks time we shall be starting the last learning session of the year but the wonderful thing is that it will be in our new accommodation.

We have had a mild rebuke from the Church because, we are told that some of our members have ignored the "KEEP OUT" signs on their building site and walked right through it. Those signs are there for our protection. When visiting the new centre please ensure that you only use the Puketapu Road entrance.

The last few weeks have been occupied with making the last minute arrangements to transfer computers, tables, files and all the other bits of equipment that go to make up an organisation such as ours. This has now been completed ready for the opening on 1st November.

In our last newsletter we asked for volunteers to help keep the learning centre clean and tidy. If sufficient people volunteer you will only be required for a short time each month and your help will be much appreciated. Alan Overington would much appreciate a call from you on 845 4188

Before the next session starts we shall be holding a meeting of Tutors & Assistants on Thursday, 30th October at 2.00pm to acquaint them with the new premises and learn where all the important switches, buttons and plugs are located not least of which will be the new security system. At the same time we shall allocate keys to those who need them and distribute the manuals to the Tutors for the next session.

As we are anxious to show off our new accommodation we are going to hold an 'Open Day' on Saturday, 1st November from 2.00pm until 4.00pm to which all our members and their partners are cordially invited so make a note of it in your diary, now, so you don't forget.
To help you to find us we have printed a map and a bit of history on one of the other pages so there is no excuse for getting lost.

Speaking of diaries I bought what looked like a very smart, faux leather bound, 2009 diary a couple of weeks ago from the $2 Shop. I had some difficulty with it trying to reconcile some dates in March until I found it had called 2009 a leap year including 29th February so from 28th February all the dates are wrong. Guess where it was printed.

We have now set the date for our AGM as Tuesday, 24th March 2009. We'll keep reminding you nearer the time.

As Christmas is drawing near we are planning a Christmas Lunch for members and their partners to be held at Napier RSA on Thursday, 4th December at 12.00noon. We shall have a room to ourselves and the meal will be a Smorgasbord including hot ham.
Please make a note of this in your diaries. We shall be giving you another reminder in the November Newsletter.

Enjoy your computing

Our New Learning Centre

After many months of negotiation and hard work by a dedicated team of volunteers we are finally ready to move into our new learning centre. This is located in the Church grounds of All Saints Church around the corner of Church Road & Puketapu Road in Taradale.
Originally called 'St.Peter's Hall' it was located adjacent to the Church Office and "Drop In' centre. When the Church decided to expand their community centre the Hall became surplus to their needs and at that time the SeniorNet was looking for alternative premises.
Following negotiations with the Vestry, SeniorNet bought the Hall and arranged to have it relocated in another part of the Church grounds. This in itself was was a fascinating experience for those of us who watched it happen. The skill and precision of the driver and the trailer was awe inspiring with such a huge piece of equipment able to move and manoeuvre within such small margins. The mission was largely accomplished by lunch time on the same day.
The hall was originally built in 1951 on land donated to the church in Avenue Road and with later additions doubled in size. There it remained until 1971 when it was moved to the All Saints site on the corner of Church Road and Puketapu Road where it remained for the next 36 years serving as a community centre.
The hall had its final move in July this year when it was relocated next to the vicarage in the church grounds. Since then it has been hard work constructing new doors, a ramp, disability toilet, painting and making computer benches.
At last it is all finished all the computers and contents of our present learning centre were moved in on 20th October in readiness for the final session of the year starting on 3rd November.

Death of Howard George Cole.

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Howard Cole, one of our most experienced tutors, on the 16th October 2008.
He had worked with computers from early days prior to joining our tutoring staff and understood the technical side of how computers operated as well as being very knowledgeable regarding the computer programmes that are used in our SeniorNet courses.
One of his main interests was the subject of Genealogy.
Howard will be sadly missed by our committee, tutoring staff and members who wish to express their condolences, on this sad occasion, to Howard's family and friends.

Mobile Emergency Number
There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies. Your mobile phone can actually be an emergency tool for survival. The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112.
If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even I the keypad is locked. Try it.
Thanks to Motueka SeniorNet

How to Resize the Recycle Bin

By default, the maximum size of the Recycle Bin on your hard drive is 10 percent of the size of the hard drive. Example, a 10GB hard drive has a maximum Recycle Bin size of 1GB - that's a lot of space to use up for files you've decided to delete.

If you delete a file that would cause the Recycle Bin to exceed that size, Windows will warn you with an error message.

You may decide either to raise this limit or lower it, either of which you can do by following this procedure:

1. You need to right-click the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop, and then choose Properties from the shortcut menu. You will see the Properties dialog box of the Recycle Bin.

2. The Properties dialog box contains a Global tab, plus a tab for each hard drive on your system. If you want to change the maximum size setting for all the hard drives at once, set the new maximum size of the Recycle Bin (as a percentage of total drive space) by moving the slider on the Global tab. Then click OK.

What is the Difference Between Plain Text and HTML Email?
Plain text means exactly what it says. Plain black text on a plain white background.
You cannot change the font style, font colour, font size, or background in plain text email. You can't embed images in plain text email. Therein lays a problem with plain text - everything in black & white and no images.
Any image you send with plain text comes as an attachment. When you think of Plain Text
email think of a Notepad text file sent via email.
When sending an e-mail Click on 'Format' and in the dropdown menu select Rich Text HTML
This stands for 'Hypertext Markup Language' is the same coding used to make a Web page.
HTML email allows for coloured fonts, changing of font faces and font sizes, italicized text, bold text, underlines, coloured backgrounds or graphical backgrounds. You can embed images in HTML email so when you send them anyone with an HTML-enabled email program can see the image you embedded without "opening" an attachment.
Email stationery requires HTML formatted email. Windows Mail, Outlook Express and Outlook are capable of sending and reading both Plain Text and HTML Email.

Cashback
Some advice for readers this month on the pitfalls of the market place. These days many items are advertised with a bonus available, either by redemption or with a cashback offer from the manufacturer.
This practice originated in the computer industry, probably because manufacturers were aware that some retailers would buy big during a promotion and sell the excess at normal prices when the promotion concluded.
Most of those cash back offers were quite genuine but it would seem that the marketing industry is now exploiting it. So what's the problem? Well, it seems that most of these offers have conditions attached.
Meeting those conditions may be so time consuming that it is not worth the effort. They have expiry dates which may be too close for you to benefit, and may incur additional costs such as courier charges.
There may be limits on the number of applications the manufacturer will accept and delays before the bonus or cash is delivered. It may be restricted to certain areas or only available to certain groups or individuals.
All you can do is to ensure the sales person gives you full details of any offer before you buy and then, at least, you have a claim on the retailer if the manufacturer defaults. Remember the old adage, still very true. "If it seems too good to be true, it probably isn't."

You've Received a Hallmark E-Card
Isn't that nice? Someone thought of you to send you the very best. Just delete it...it's a fake. You will probably get a virus.
A couple of items to notice that it's a fake. First off, the spelling. It's received not RECIEVED.
And Hallmark will always tell you specifically who the card is from...it won't be addressed to you from a "friend" or "neighbour"
If you hover above the link that says click "here"... you will see that it doesn't have Hallmark.com in the address but an IP address with an .exe extension... that is bad. It will run a program on your computer immediately.
Telltale signs of a fake ecard
- Spelling mistakes - e.g. congratulation! Or your name is misspelled

- Errors in the message -e.g. it says you sent a card, not received one.

- The sender isn't someone you know

- The sender has a bogus name (Joe Cool, Agatha Tragonwawar, Card Sender, Secret Admirer, etc.)

- A URL that appears odd - e.g. www.http:// rather than http://www.

Hidden Taskbar Icons
"Are you annoyed by the slide cover that hides the notification icons on the task bar ? (next to the clock)
Click on Start with the right mouse button > Properties and with the left mouse button, click on the Task Bar tab and remove the tick from "Hide Inactive Icons", then OK

Saving Paper
Wasting paper wastes money, and besides that, a document that ends up with only one or two lines on the last page doesn't look very pleasing. There are a number of ways you can squeeze a little more text onto the page to eliminate those "orphan" lines. You could, of course, use a slightly smaller font size. Or you could fiddle with the margin settings. But he easiest way is to let Word do it for you.
Here's how in Office 2003 or 2007:
1. In Word 2003 (or 2007 with Classic Menu installed),
Click File/Print Preview.
Or in Word 2007, click the Microsoft Office logo button, select Print and then Print Preview.
2. Click the Shrink to Fit or Shrink One Page button.
3. Word will automatically adjust text size and spacing.
4. If you don't like the results, press CTRL+Z to undo.

Time for a Smile

After a caller gave a technician her PC's serial number, he scanned a database of registered users and responded, "I see you have an Acer desktop unit." Before he could say another word, the caller shrieked and said she'd be right back.
When the customer returned, the technician asked if she was all right. The caller responded: "Had I realized you could see me, I would have worn my bathrobe."
