From the President

I can't believe that Spring has at last arrived. What a pleasure it has been in recent weeks to drive down to the Learning Centre and see all the blossom on the trees, the lambs in the paddocks and the willows turning green again. I hate Winter and I hate being cold, so now roll on Summer and lower power bills.

As you will know, we held an 'Open Day' on August 15th and with the fantastic help of members distributing Flyers to homes and in the shopping areas we had a most successful day. In fact the most successful ever and as a result we signed on over 30 new members. Whilst this is a great achievement and one deserving of thanks to all involved it does raise a problem. All of these new members will be wanting to take the Introductory courses and eventually move on to the Word Processing courses in either XP or Vista. We have a wonderful team of Tutors and Assistants who contribute a great deal of their time but this may not be enough. Hopefully some of those students who have recently completed courses will consider putting their names forward as Assistant Tutors. You can be assured that as an Assistant Tutor you will gain useful knowledge and experience.
The fifth session of the year has just started.

On a sad note you will have learned that Vicki Johnston, our Life Member, died at the end of last month almost a year since she opened our new Learning Centre. Vicki was a founding member of SeniorNet Napier over 10 years ago and made a valuable contribution to our branch as a Committee member and as a Tutor. She will be sadly missed.

As there has been a slight imbalance in the number of computers available for tutoring we have now purchased an additional computer with Vista and Word 2007 installed. This now gives us 5 computers with XP and 5 with Vista and avoids us having to bring the laptop out of the cupboard as a stand in.

On Tuesday, 15th September, we hosted an all day Regional meeting to which we invited Gisborne and Hawkes Bay branches of SeniorNet and which was attended by 47 people. In the morning we welcomed Grant Sidaway and Jude Mitchener from the SeniorNet Federation. Grant gave us all the latest developments at the Federation followed by a presentation on Tutoring Techniques with regard to Senior students. In the afternoon there were presentations on 'Skype', by Norman Richardson from Hawkes Bay SeniorNet, and on 'Speech Recognition' by myself. A very enjoyable meeting

Ila McInnes, our Membership Secretary for many years and previously the Branch Secretary has resigned to persue other interests. Ila was one of our founding members over 10 years ago and since then has worked hard within our branch and will be missed by all of us.

At a Committee function, Ila was presented with a printer as a token of our thanks.

Enjoy your computing

Gordon Brown

Session 6
2nd November to 11th December
Please ring the Course & Tutor Co-ordinator,
Sue Gay, 844 4302 to enrol NOW
and to save disappointment.
Places are filling fast.

WHERE'S THE MOUSE POINTER?

Do you sometimes have trouble finding your mouse pointer on the screen?
Well, here's how to make it stand out when you press the CTRL key.
It suddenly comes up with some rings around it and shows you where it is on your screen.
This works in XP and Vista
1. Click 'Start' then Control Panel
2. Click on the Mouse Icon
3. Choose 'Pointer Options'
4. Select "Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key."
5. Click Apply

Now, when you can't see your mouse pointer,
Press the CTRL key and 'hey presto'
some rings appear and shows you where the pointer is.

READING AN ATTACHMENT

Viruses spread over recent times have frequently targeted email attachments.
To safeguard your computer from attack and infection, observe the following:

NEVER "open" an attachment directly.
If you are not sure that the message + attachment comes from
a reputable source, permanently delete the message.
If you suspect that someone else is using your friend's
email
address to foist an infected attachment on you,
send a message to your friend, asking for verification,
before opening the attachment.

Always save it to Desktop.
Right click the file name in the attachments line and select Save.
In Windows XP click the Reveal Arrow beside the Save in box
to navigate to Desktop (Double click) and click Save to
save the file to Desktop under its own name.
In Windows Vista navigate to Desktop (in the left margin).
(Double click) and click Save to save the file to Desktop under its own name.
Press and hold the Windows icon (next to Ctrl on bottom
row of keyboard) and tap the letter D. This takes you
immediately to view the Desktop.
Find the attachment's name or icon and Right click on it.
Click on Scan with (your Anti-Virus program).
When scan is complete (if no virus detected)
click Finish.
Double click on the attachment's icon
on the Desktop to open the attachment to read it or view it.
This may seem a lot of hooha, but you can never tell when
a virus is lurking. Even emails that appear to be from your friends
can actually have been generated from
their computer if they
have a virus, and your friends won't even know that it has been sent
- so:
ALWAYS SCAN ATTACHMENTS FOR VIRUSES BEFORE OPENING THEM

THE LIFE OF USB FLASHDRIVES

Will your USB drives last forever?
Well, no. But probably long enough for most of us.
All flash memory has a finite life, a certain number of read/write cycles the memory cells can withstand without becoming unreliable.

Two major kinds of memory-cell architectures are in use: single-level cells (SLC) and multilevel cells (MLC), which are the ones used in most inexpensive flash drives. MLC has an expected lifetime of about 10,000 read-write cycles, says Windows Secrets website.

If you're using a flash memory device just to carry files around, 10K cycles is more than you're ever likely to need. But if the flash memory is constantly attached to your PC and being used all the time as a kind of system scratchpad, 10K cycles may not be enough.
You can use a flash drive in this way with Vista's "ReadyBoost" feature to increase available memory and operating speed, but lab tests have suggested only very minor improvements result. The ReadyBoost system is sufficiently ineffectual to make it a much better idea simply to fit more RAM in the computer.

OPEN OFFICE Vs. MICROSOFT OFFICE - Which is better?

There are as many arguments for and against both suites as there are grains of sand on a beach!
I have used both programs and found things wrong with both, also some great things about both.
At the end of the day the question is which do you think is the best for you?
Without talking about the companies that makes the program or prices, just purely on the function of the program and nothing else.
But don't loose site of prices, MS can be purchased from $90 to $200 plus while OpenOffice can be a free download (It takes 90 minutes on broadband) or a $5 CD purchase.
If you want to be conventional and pay the price so be it. If you are considering upgrading from say MS Word 2000 or 2003, the transition to OpenOffice Writer is far simpler than the new look Word 2007. The interface is what you are used too, without having to re-learn too much. Sure with OpenOffice things are not in the same place or the icons are a little different. Also OpenOffice does not have all the "bells and whistles" but for most seniors it's quite adequate and it's free!!
You can still share files with friends using whatever version of MS Word they use.
You can still read your old Word files or any Word files sent to you. You can still send documents via email, scan in pictures, or convert a file to pdf.
So where is the catch? Well, there is not really one at all, it's all in the mind or pocket.
Do you want to conform to what other use or do you have a mind of your own?

SAVING IN WORD 2007

You may not have realised that when you save your document in Word 2007, it saves as a .docx. This format can only be read by another computer using Office 2007.
If you were to send it to someone with an older version of Office, they cannot read it. However, it is easily remedied!!
Simply go to the Office button - "Save as" option - and select the "Word 97 - 2003 document".
As you continue typing and "Save" ing your work,
(which of course you always do??) the document remains readable by Word 97 -2003.

This option is available in all of the Office 2007 programs
