From the President

On Sunday, 1st February we held the annual luncheon for Tutors, their Assistants and partners. This is held to express the appreciation of SeniorNet for the time and work put in by these people in order to run our numerous classes. As it happened this proved to be the hottest day ever experienced in Napier with a temperature of 37°C which made the ice cream dessert all the more welcome.

The first learning session is now well on it's way although the number of students is down on previous sessions which may be due to a reduced number of new members or possibly due to the time of year with members away on holiday (if they can afford it).

In an effort to increase membership we held an open day on Saturday,14th February, which appears to have been most successful with 14 new members enrolled. Flyers had been printed and a pack of 10 flyers given to each tutor at the lunch for them to distribute to Dairies, Doctors Surgeries and house to house in their locality. In view of the recent opening of new Greenmeadows New World supermarket we got permission to distribute our flyers in the entrance foyer as shoppers were coming and going and it all seems to have been a worthwhile exercise.

Regarding Newsletters your Committee has agreed to come into line with most other SeniorNet branches and to issue the Newsletter every 2 months instead of monthly. I hope this doesn't disappoint you too much as I am sure you all look forward to reading it! . However as this move lightens the burden on our co-editor, Dorothy, she has now agreed to put her name forward for the position of Secretary for the coming year

In view of the forthcoming AGM in a few weeks time this Newsletter is being distributed by mail rather than e-mail as it contains Nomination Forms and the formal notice of AGM and its Agenda to be held on Tuesday, 24th March. After the AGM there will be presentation by Grant Sidaway of the SeniorNet Federation. There will then be refreshments and the formal cutting of our 10th Birthday cake. Please do try to be there as it is your opportunity to air your views and guide your new Committee in future activities.

Choosing a Serif Typeface or a Sans Serif Typeface
Which is Which ?

Serifs are the funny little "tails" at the end of the stems of some letters in a particular font.
Sans serif fonts don't have the tails.
Whether you choose a serif or sans serif font depends on your situation.
Here are some of the more common fonts separated by type

When you're trying to figure out whether to pick a serif or sans serif font, consider if this is for an on-screen job or a print job

Studies show, a serif font is easier to read in print, while a sans serif font is better when reading something on the computer.

The theory is that serifs form a visual guide or train, which helps the reader's eye follow the type and read groups of words rather than single words one at a time. And while this works great for print, it doesn't work as well for the screen. So, to sum up:

1. Use a serif font for printed materials such as books, reports, and catalogues.

2. Use a sans serif font for documents or other things you'll be popping up onto the Web.

Unfreeze that Computer

Shutting your computer off at the switch and then turning it back on will certainly unfreeze your computer - and it certainly may result in some Windows problems too. In addition you'll lose any current documents you're working on.
Also, restarting this way takes some time...especially if your computer's getting older and you've installed lots and lots of software.
So, here's a really nifty trick that has bailed folk out more than a few times - you might want to memorise this one because someday you're going to need it. --
If you're ever working in Windows and suddenly everything freezes, don't panic. Don't hit the "Off" button. Don't take a chance on losing your work. Try this:
1. Press the "CTRL" "ALT" "DELETE" keys in sequence
2. Task Manager Appears
3. Click The "Processes" Tab
4. Find any and all instances of "Explorer.exe" and close them all by right-clicking and choosing "End Process"
5. If you've done this successfully your taskbar will disappear - don't worry - that's what you want.
6. Now, while you're still in Task Manager, click "File" "New task" and type in "explorer.exe" (without the quotes)
7. Your taskbar should now reappear and your computer that was frozen should now be ready to go. This trick will work most of the time - but not always. Sometimes you cannot even use your CTRL - ALT -DELETE keys. If this happens you'll just have to shut her down, and, then restart.

 

Seeing Details in Folders

When MY DOCUMENTS is opened, there is a Tool Bar at the top of the page which has an icon that gives options for the list of files to be displayed. Click on the Down Chevron for the following choices: Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List, Details. Each one is good for different purposes.
Thumbnails, Tiles and Icons all show a somewhat similar view of what is in the selected folder, but in more detail for Thumbnails and with less detail for Icons. Of course, with more detail there will be fewer on the page.

List shows a listing of only the names of all the folders and files contained in the selected folder.

Details will give the name of the folder or file, its size, file type (if applicable) and the date it was last modified.

All these are quite useful when looking for a specific type of file.

Some new terms to familiarize yourself with given the current financial climate.
CEO - Chief Embezzlement Officer.
CFO - Corporate Fraud Officer.
BULL MARKET - A random market movement causing an investor to mistake himself for a financial genius.
BEAR MARKET - A 6 to 18 month period when the kids get no allowance, and the wife gets no jewelry..
VALUE INVESTING - The art of buying low and selling lower.
P/E RATIO - The percentage of investors wetting their pants as the market keeps crashing.
BROKER - What my broker has made me.
STANDARD & POOR - Your life in a nutshell.
STOCK ANALYST - Idiot who just downgraded your stock.
STOCK SPLIT - When your ex-wife and her lawyer split your assets equally between themselves.
FINANCIAL PLANNER - A guy whose phone has been disconnected.
MARKET CORRECTION - The day after you buy stocks.
CASH FLOW - The movement your money makes as it disappears down the toilet.
YAHOO - What you yell after selling it to some poor sucker for $240 per share.
WINDOWS - What you jump out of when you're the sucker who bought Yahoo @ $240 per share.
INSTITUTIONAL INVESTOR - Past year investor who's now locked up in a nuthouse.
PROFIT - An archaic word no longer in use.

Printing the Newsletter from your computer.
To save ink you may like to print it in "draft".
How? Go to File > Print > Properties > Print quality > click the down arrow and select draft > then print. If you only want to print off, say pages 1,3 and 7. Go to File >Print > in pages slot type 1,3,7 then O.K.
If you only want a portion of a page, highlight the
portion you want, again, click print and click selection
and that will be all you will get.
Again, if you have a problem please contact
